Top 10 Films about Time Travelling
The concept of time travelling is a matchless resource for sci-fi writers, so much so that many films were made on this subject. Heroes crossed the borders of time and embarked on an adventure in the past. Here are the top 10 films about time travelling.
1- The Time Machine (1960)
The protagonist of the movie, George, is able to go back and forth in time with a machine he invented. Travelling into distant future from his time (1899), George witnesses wars between mankind’s descendants.
2- Planet of the Apes (1968)
Astronaut Taylor (Heston) goes through a blackhole and travels to a strange planet where intelligent apes dominate mute, primitive humans. At the end of the movie, we see the remains of the Statue of Liberty in New York and understand that this planet is our very own Earth. We understand that the astronaut travelled into the future.
3- Superman (1978)
Even though Superman is not actually a time travelling movie, it is definitely one we should watch. Our red-caped hero turns the world backwards and travels back in time to save the woman he loves.
4- Terminator (1984)
Mankind brought the apocalypse on itself via a man-made computer system called Skynet. Robots destroyed most of mankind, but people still resisted. Before the insurgents could defeat Skynet, they send the Terminator, a cyborg assassin, back in time.
5- Back to the Future (1985)
The entertaining and crazy “Back to the Future” trilogy told the concept of time travelling in a language that can be understood by everyone. Despite the 30+ years since then, the trilogy is still the best time travelling movie.
6- Groundhog Day (1993)
Time travelling movies usually include post-apocalyptic scenarios or criminal stories. “Groundhog Day” has a more positive and fun time travelling plot than most. A famous TV weatherman gets stuck in a tiny town. When he wakes up with the urge to run away the next day, he realizes that he woke up in the same day. Our protagonist lives the same day over and over again as he is forced to search for a more meaningful life.
7-AROG (2008)
We were obligated to add a Turkish movie on this list. Famous comedian Cem Yılmaz is sent back 1 million years by his arch enemy in this movie he wrote and directed.
8- Midnight in Paris (2011)
Famous director Woody Allen’s movie is a praise of Paris’ past. Focusing on an engaged couple’s pre-marital Paris journey, the movie gets a plot twist when the groom-to-be Gil weirdly travels back in time.
9- Source Code (2011)
One of the most common themes in time travelling movies is parallel universes and different time scenarios. “Source Code” tells the story of a soldier living the same events over and over again in a commuter train with a terrorist bomb in it that is about to go off, until he can find the bomber.
10- Looper (2012)
One of the ethical concerns in time travelling is whether a crime was committed on a certain date. In “Looper”, criminals of the future find a safe way to commit murder. They send their targets back in time and ensure that today’s assassins do the job for them. This way, no actual crimes are committed in the future. One day, one of the assassins (Joe) meets himself...
