Culture & Travel
10 August 2023"With Succession being an eagerly anticipated hit and viewers showing immense interest in the story of the Roy family, the filming locations are also drawing a lot of attention. Executive producer Scott Ferguson and his team considered different countries but soon realized that Norway boasts an extraordinary landscape like nowhere else in the world. He told Variety: "Norway is a stunning, natural setting. It just seemed like the perfect place for a family reunion on the show."
Not all of us live a life of luxury like the Roy family, but we can experience Norway like them by planning an exciting route. Let's explore the locations featured in the series together!
Juvet Hotel
The series delves into significant events, like the death of Logan Roy, and family rivalries. In season 4 episode 5, some of the major action scenes were shot at Juvet Landskapshotel, a picturesque hotel tucked away in the woods near Valldall, Norway, located between the UNESCO world heritage sites of Geiranger Fjord and Trollstigen.
"We were genuinely thrilled by the exceptional architecture of Juvet and the beauty of its surroundings - there's nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world," Ferguson shared with Variety earlier.
The use of this award-winning hotel, with its remarkable architecture on the south-west coast of Norway, caused the website to crash as the daily hits surged from the usual 400-500 to 18,500. The downside is that the hotel is fully booked for the summer. So, if you want to experience a vacation in this extraordinary place, it's better to book for next year now!
The Atlantic Ocean Road
Welcome to one of the most breathtaking drives in the world: The Atlantic Ocean Road! Explore Norway's stunning coastline on this winding 8.3 km road that twists through small islands and connects the towns of Kristiansund and Molde. It crosses eight bridges and offers a fantastic blend of ocean and mountain views.
But, be warned, this is not for the faint of heart! The road is narrow and curvy, and the weather can be unpredictable. You might encounter strong winds and rain, but don't fret! If you're physically and mentally prepared for this adventure, the payoff will be absolutely spectacular!
Trollstigen
Located 70 km north of the Geiranger fjord, this road is a jaw-dropping natural beauty! However, it's so treacherous in winter that it's only open from late May until fall. So, you'll have to wait for summer to experience this marvel.
Built in the 1930s, this 850-meter high mountain road connects Vestland and Åndalsnes and descends into a valley with cascading waterfalls.
Ålesund
This town is renowned for its stunning art nouveau architecture, which was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904. The Jugendstilsenteret Museum showcases incredible details of the town's reconstruction in the early 20th century after much of it was destroyed by fire. Many visitors opt to explore the town by boat, and for those who are up for a challenge, there's an option for a 7 km skiing adventure. The area is famous for its seafood, and The Storfjord Hotel and Hotel Brosundet are two fantastic places where you can savor delicious local dishes in a laid-back atmosphere.
Romsdalsgondolen
Welcome to Romsdal Gondola, the first of its kind in Norway's enchanting Romsdal Alps! This relatively new attraction, launched in 2019, offers travelers a breathtaking experience. At 1,011 m, it's the most enjoyable way to reach the summit of Mount Hoven.
The gondola ride, a memory you'll cherish forever, takes just 10 minutes. As you ascend, you'll pass through steep cliffs, glide over rushing waterfalls, and immerse yourself in the beauty of lush forests. Then, the magnificent Romsdal Alps will unfold before you, presenting a magical picture of nature coming to life.
Eggen Restaurant
Located only 5 minutes from Romsdal Gondola, Eggen Restaurant sits high in the sky on the ridge of Mount Nesaksla and is a must for any food lover visiting Norway. Eggen's menu focuses on seasonal produce from local farmers, featuring delicacies such as the region's fresh lake fish and the wild fruits and mushrooms they gather.
The menu changes frequently to embrace the flavors of each season, ensuring that every dish is prepared with the most flavorful ingredients. The restaurant also boasts an impressive drinks selection and an elaborate cocktail menu.
Eggen Restaurant offers a culinary experience that reflects the local flavors and the natural essence of the region. It's an essential stop for food enthusiasts, where you can savor each meal infused with the culture of the area and indulge in a delightful dining experience.
We set sail to the enchanting landscapes of Norway, inspired by the world of Succession, which opened the doors of Norway to its viewers. From the competitive world of the Roy brothers to the magical fairy tale land of Norway, get ready to enjoy your unforgettable travels!
