Culture & Travel
13 May 2025When someone says, “Autumn is art, the rest is just seasons,” one of the first places that comes to mind is Kastamonu.
If you want to witness the breathtaking shades of yellow, orange, and red in all their glory, Kastamonu should definitely be on your list. Home to stunning natural wonders such as Valla Canyon, Ilgarini Cave, Horma Canyon, and Ilıca Waterfall, the region offers a true visual feast. Most of these attractions are located in the Pınarbaşı area. Set aside at least 2 to 3 days to explore and fully enjoy the magic of autumn here.
Horma Canyon
Located within the Küre Mountains National Park and just 4 kilometers from the town of Pınarbaşı, Horma Canyon is one of the most breathtaking canyons in Turkiye—and a must-see on any travel list.
As you walk along the impressive 3-kilometer wooden platform—a true feat of engineering—stretching deep into the canyon, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing views at every turn. The vivid turquoise waters of the Zara Stream enhance the canyon’s beauty, making each step a feast for the eyes. Plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here to fully enjoy the experience.
With its endemic flora, rich biodiversity, and unique ambiance, Horma Canyon dazzles not only in autumn but throughout all seasons. Nature lovers and photography enthusiasts will fall in love with this magical place. As you hike through the canyon, you’ll not only capture unforgettable photos, but also reach a hidden surprise waiting at the end of the trail.
It’s also an ideal canyon for amateur-level canyoneers to gain experience and improve their skills.
At the entrance, you’ll find a parking area and a small café where you can grab snacks and light refreshments.
The entrance fee is 7₺ for adults and 3.5₺ for students.
Ilıca Waterfall
After completing the 3-kilometer walk through Horma Canyon, you’ll be greeted by a hidden paradise: Ilıca Waterfall.
Formed by the Zara Stream cascading down from a height of around 10 meters, this natural waterfall and pool enchant visitors with their exotic appearance. The soothing sound of the water blending with birdsong, combined with the refreshing atmosphere, makes this one of the most delightful spots to unwind. On hot summer days, you may even spot people taking a dip in its cool waters. Depending on the season, the pool displays a range of colors, but there's a good chance you'll witness its famous turquoise hue.
Surrounded by lush greenery and beech trees, Ilıca Waterfall can be admired from several different angles—offering a spectacular palette of colors to enjoy to the fullest.
If you prefer, you can visit Ilıca Waterfall directly without stopping by Horma Canyon first—or visit the canyon afterward. However, for a more enjoyable experience, I recommend exploring the canyon first and then heading to the waterfall. To avoid crowds, it’s best to arrive early in the morning.
Valla Canyon
Have you ever heard of Valla Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world and the second deepest overall?
This breathtaking natural wonder leaves you questioning everything with its sheer magnitude and jaw-dropping views. Located 26 kilometers from the town of Pınarbaşı, it's easy to reach using GPS navigation. A specially built observation deck allows visitors to admire the canyon’s stunning panorama. To reach the double-deck viewing platform, you’ll take a pleasant forest walk of about 1.5 kilometers. It’s not too difficult and is especially beautiful in the fall, surrounded by rich seasonal colors.
With a dense forest of pine and beech trees behind you, a magnificent canyon in front, and a view of the Devrekani and Kanlıçay rivers to your left, the Valla Canyon observation deck offers a scene you’ll definitely want to capture. The canyon is so deep that it takes a brave heart to look down. With sections reaching depths of up to 1,200 meters and known for its many hazards, Valla is considered one of the most difficult canyons to cross. Due to the challenging and dangerous terrain, it’s impossible to pass through without proper equipment, and unauthorized entry into the canyon is strictly prohibited.
Entrance fees are 9₺ for adults and 4.5₺ for students.
With all its grandeur, Valla Canyon is undoubtedly one of the top highlights in the region—make sure it’s on your list.
Ilgarini Cave
Ilgarini Cave is one of the most striking natural formations within the Küre Mountains National Park. Though little known, this remarkable cave is listed as the fourth deepest in the world. It features an arched entrance, and inside you'll find remnants dating back to 2000 BCE, including tombs and cisterns from the Roman and Byzantine periods.
You can reach the cave after a 1.5 to 2-hour hike from the trailhead. Along the 2.5-kilometer trail, there are also two additional natural wonders to explore—Mantar Cave (Mushroom Cave) and Ejder Çukuru (Dragon Pit). While there are signs and trail markers along the way, the route is fully immersed in nature and it’s possible to get lost. If you don't have prior experience with hiking in such terrain, it’s highly recommended to go with a local guide.
Plan to spend at least 3 to 4 hours in this magical area, which offers unique views and a dreamlike atmosphere that will make you feel as if you've stepped into a fairy tale.
With 70% of its land covered in forests, Kastamonu is a stunning destination that offers breathtaking scenery all year round—especially in autumn. It’s full of vibrant colors, hidden gems, and untouched landscapes just waiting to be explored. Located about 6 hours from Istanbul and 3 hours from Ankara, it’s a perfect getaway to add to your itinerary and travel plans.
