How to Get to Muscat
The most preferred way to reach Muscat is by air, with direct flights from many major cities worldwide. Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Emirates, British Airways, and Turkish Airlines all offer direct flights to the city. Flights from Istanbul to Muscat take about 4-5 hours.
From Muscat International Airport, located 30 kilometers from the city center, you can either use the city’s efficient public transportation network or take a taxi, which is reasonably priced.
Another way to reach Muscat is by road. You can travel by car from neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The drive from Dubai to Muscat takes about 4 hours.
Places to Visit in Muscat
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
One of Muscat’s most impressive and iconic structures is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, considered a modern masterpiece of Islamic architecture. Built at the request of Sultan Qaboos bin Said and opened for worship in 2001, the mosque is a must-see for anyone visiting Muscat.
With its large golden dome and five tall minarets, the mosque is an integral part of the city’s skyline. One of the most striking features is the crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall. This enormous chandelier, 14 meters high and weighing 8.5 tons, is made up of 600,000 crystal pieces and was designed by Swarovski.
The main prayer hall also houses one of the world's largest handmade carpets, woven by 600 women in Iran, covering an area of 4,263 square meters and taking four years to complete.
Mutrah Souq: Muscat's Historic Market
For an authentic Arab market experience, you must visit Muscat’s historic Mutrah Souq. One of the city's oldest and busiest markets, Mutrah Souq is a maze of narrow alleys and colorful shops, reflecting Muscat’s rich cultural atmosphere.
Here’s what you can do at the souq: The market, a central hub of Muscat’s trade and social life for centuries, offers an array of notable products, especially essential Omani spices like turmeric, saffron, and cardamom, which are popular with both locals and tourists. Traditional Omani jewelry adorned with gold, silver, and precious stones, handmade carpets, ceramics, copper items, abayas, dishdashas, pashminas, silk shawls, and many other authentic Omani products can be found here.
Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts
Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts are two historical and strategically significant forts in Muscat, standing guard over the city and the Gulf of Oman for centuries. These forts provide valuable insights into Muscat’s rich history and offer visitors a glimpse into the past.

Royal Opera House Muscat: Oman’s Center of Art and Culture
The Royal Opera House Muscat is one of Oman’s most important cultural landmarks. The Royal Opera House is not just a performance venue but also a symbol of Oman’s cultural heritage and modern vision.
Designed as a modern interpretation of traditional Omani architecture, the opera house features a striking white marble exterior and intricate local craftsmanship in its interior.
Qurum Beach
Lastly, we’ll talk about Qurum Beach, one of Muscat’s most popular beaches. Favored by locals and tourists alike, Qurum Beach boasts a 4-kilometer stretch of sandy shoreline meeting the clear waters of the Gulf of Oman. When to Visit Muscat
Muscat enjoys a sunny and warm climate year-round. When planning your trip, consider both the weather and the city’s events. The best time to visit Muscat is during the winter, from November to March, when temperatures range from 20-25 degrees Celsius, providing perfect conditions for outdoor activities and enjoying the beaches.
From June to September, the weather is hot and humid, making it more challenging to stay outdoors for long periods. During this time, it’s best to spend your time in air-conditioned places or by the sea.
